Hypermobility Disorders

Diagnosis like Ehrlo’s-Danlo’s, or hypermobility syndrome, can cause looseness to the skin and underlying tissues, as well as increased range of motion to the joints. You might have been one of those kids that could show all your friends how you could put your hands flat on the floor when you bent over, or you could bend your fingers backwards, or hyperextended your elbow. These same symptoms, later in life, can cause back pain, hip pain, pelvic pain, pelvic organ prolapse, painful sex, bladder pain and gastrointestinal dysfunction.

The pelvic floor is made up of connective tissue. When this tissue becomes stretched and/or compromised with age, having babies, abdominal surgeries, the looseness of the connective tissue, causes a counter-reaction. Our body, in attempt to compensate for the lack of stability, because we have so much mobility, will begin to over-activate the muscles of the pelvic floor. The body is trying to provide more support. The pelvic floor supports all our organs from above and absorbs the ground forces from below with each step we take.

At Integrative Pelvic Health, we are trained to deal with these complexities. We can provide education on how to care for your joints and give support to the muscles that are weak, while providing mobility through soft tissue work, body work, and stretches.
